You found me!
Hi! I'm Jack MacCarthy (f.k.a. Rae Mariah MacCarthy or just Mariah).
My writing contains tenderness and brutality in unequal measure. My stories tend to be sexy, femme-driven, queer, and funny. My plays have been done everywhere from New York subway stations to the Paris stage.
My first novel, Squad, was published in 2019 with FSG! It's available for order from Amazon (budget option) or Indiebound (save-our-indies option). NPR says: "Squad is a short, highly concentrated blast of a book that revels in all the best and worst feelings of high school and offers the reader a charismatic and imperfect character to fall in love with. Jenna certainly won me over, and so did Squad."
I once ran a theatre company called Caps Lock. We did funny, human, ugly plays. I've also curated and produced innovative and sexy festivals for Caps Lock and The Brick in Williamsburg. I write other things too, like articles for BuzzFeed, Refinery29, SheKnows, Yes! Magazine, Romper, Brooklyn Rail, and more.
I'm trying to transcend isolation and empower you (yes, you specifically) through performance, events, instruction, and the written word. I am at your service.

My transgender adaptation of Pinocchio, "A Real Boy," is out now on the Girl Tales podcast! "Geppetto always wanted a child of his own so when he found a magical piece of wood, he decided to make his dream come true. He chiseled away and lo and behold, his child came to life! But he got two things wrong. Pinocchio wasn’t a girl and he didn’t want to be made of wood. Run along with Pinocchio as he sings for an adoring audience, celebrates his birthday everyday on Toyland, leads an army of kid donkeys, gets sucked into the belly of an enormous whale, and with the help of his friend Blue Fairy, discovers the love he and his Dad share." Listen on the Girl Tales website, or wherever you get your podcasts.
My memoir piece, "My Boy, Their Son," is out now with Amazon Originals! It was the #1 new release on Amazon in three categories, and their #1 best seller in Humor & Entertainment. You can buy the Kindle and audio version now, or read for free with an Amazon Prime subscription!
My young adult novel, Squad, is out now with Farrar, Straus and Giroux! It's now available for order from Amazon (budget option), Indiebound (save-our-indies option), or Audible (hear me read to you!). NPR says: "Squad is a short, highly concentrated blast of a book that revels in all the best and worst feelings of high school and offers the reader a charismatic and imperfect character to fall in love with. Jenna certainly won me over, and so did Squad."
My solo show, Baby Mama: One Woman's Quest to Give Her Child to Gay People, is available for booking! Check out our page at Off Broadway Touring for more info on how you can bring this piece to your venue.
After our run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Broadway Baby said: "★★★★★ Baby Mama is a shining diamond of a show: beautiful storytelling and intimate staging come together to create a heartbreakingly cathartic experience that you should not miss this Fringe. If you go and see one new show at the Fringe this year, make it this one."
This after being a Critic's Pick in Cincinnati, "not to be missed" in San Diego, and winning The Dr. Robert J. Thierauf Producer's Pick Award. Time Out New York called Baby Mama "funny and moving," and we were a Village Voice Choice and a Theatre Is Easy Best Bet. Check out more Baby Mama press here!

I'm on BuzzFeed! It was such a pleasure to write about my queer family for their LGBT section! Check out my article here: The Gay Couple Who Adopted My Baby Are Exactly the Parents I Wanted Him to Have
I was delighted to write for The Blood Brothers' brilliant 4-part horror podcast, Dead Air. You can hear my work on Episodes 1 and 3 with my horrifying audio plays, "City of Glass" and "White Noise." Listener discretion is advised.
